A smart meter can be used for several purposes. The meter is supplied with a ZigBee module as well as GSM/MPRS and/or wireless m-bus communications modules including an intelligent data logger.
Automated meter reading from different kinds of meters
The built-in concentrator is capable of collecting meter readings from up to 16 different ZigBee compliant meter units in the system. The meter units can be different kind of meters like power, water, gas and heating connected to the wireless ZigBee network.
The smart meter registers meter readings at preselected time intervals and sends automatically the data at the specified times. All data loggings are stored in a data flash. From this, is it possible to read out the data classified by dates (start and end), logs recorded since last read out, number of logs from oldest/newest log. The concentrator can configure different logging intervals for each meter, ranging from one minute to 24 months.
In addition to the meter data, the concentrator also contains an alarm log capable of storing the latest 48 alarms from every single meter unit in the system.
Gateway for ZigBee Home Automation device
A smart meter also acts as a gateway to ZigBee compliant home automation devices. This way, the meter facilitates remote control and surveillance.
The smart meter gives you remote access to a number of auxiliary functions as well. You can change all parameters, update programs in the data logger, and update ZigBee functionality. This ensures cost-effective operation.
In addition, a wireless communications module provides you with a flexible solution. Via ZigBee, you can link up different devices such as alarms and control switches (with integrated power meter function), temperature, and motion sensors.
