Detect accidents and illnesses of seniors with motion and entry sensors

The IoT opens new possibilities within home care. With the right devices, technology can help keep track of seniors’ and patients’ movements and well-being.

By tracking movements and identifying irregularities, relatives of seniors living independently can be sure their loved ones are safe and can send for help in case of a potential accident. In care facilities or hospitals, IoT devices can help staff quickly respond to any incidents without the need of being present at all times, which makes their time more effective, reduces costs, and improves the quality of care.

Two devices that are especially useful in the home care sector are window sensors and motion sensors. An Entry Sensor can be attached to a door or window and detects and reports their opening and closing. The sensor can thus monitor the entrance and exit of buildings. To monitor activity within the house, motion sensors can be installed. With the Motion Sensor, residents’ movements in different parts of the house can be monitored and irregularities detected.

Has there been an accident?

As part of a home care solution, motion sensors and window sensors can monitor a person’s movement and indicate irregularities. For instance, the Motion Sensor can identify when and where a person last moved inside the house, while an Entry Sensor can determine the last time the person has left the house.

When no movement is discovered by the sensors for an unusual amount of time, this can indicate a medical emergency. With the help of a home care solution including the sensors, relatives and care professionals can be alerted to make sure the person in need gets help.

How much is the kitchen or bathroom used?

Regular use of the kitchen and bathrooms can give indications about a person’s nutrition and hygiene. Motion sensors can monitor how often residents use a specific room or area of the house. Through this tracking of the person’s behavior, potential irregularities that can lead or hint to illnesses can be detected and addressed early on.

Is a senior spending a lot of time alone?

With an IoT home care solution, social isolation can be detected through the tracking of movements, for example with an Entry Sensor. Attached to a senior’s door, the sensor can help monitor how much time a person is spending home alone.

As many seniors might not be willing to admit that they are in fact lonely, the use of IoT devices can give relatives indications that their loved one might need more social contact. They can then take action to support and make them feel more socially included and prevent any negative health effects.
