Develco Products participates in new energy efficiency research project

Develco Products has partnered up with Elbek & Vejrup A/S, University of Southern Denmark (SDU), and Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN) to develop an integrated system solution that is to improve the energy efficiency and indoor climate of medium to large-sized public and commercial buildings. The project, abbreviated as CELSIUS, is a part of the global movement against climate change and will run for two years.

Using IoT to optimize building energy efficiency

The heating and cooling of buildings accounts for 50 percent of the electricity consumed by buildings. Often a portion of this electricity is wasted due to faults in building management systems. As building sectors are said to contribute to approximately 30% of global carbon emissions, actions must be taken to optimize energy expenditure.

The CELSIUS partner consortium aims to deploy a wireless building management solution that will both reduce the installation costs due to the lack of wired devices and allow for remote monitoring and controlling of the system. Additionally, automating the system will require less future maintenance and provide more accurate diagnostics, making this solution more cost-effective and feasible for not only large but also medium-sized buildings. Ultimately, the proposed IoT system will improve the indoor climate and energy efficiency of buildings, thus reducing electricity waste.

Testing will be carried out in Denmark and Malaysia to ensure a realistic examination of the solution under different environmental conditions.

Automatic configuration and fleet management of large scale IoT networks

Develco Products participates in CELSIUS as the primary supplier of the IoT platform, consisting of gateways, wireless devices, software, and application. The technical tasks during this project include adding features that enable Zigbee devices to automatically join the nearest Zigbee router, as well as features enabling fleet management of large-scale IoT networks.

These new features will improve the efficiency of the building management systems and reduce energy expenditure. Additionally, a cloud integration and testing with the Microsoft Azure platform will ensure the solution has the capacity to store the data from the sensors, especially concerning large buildings.
