How IoT can help ensure compliance with hygiene procedures in private and public structures

The dynamic of the current pandemic situation has given field and priority to the development of technologies, products, and services that aim to benefit each member of society and protect their wellbeing.

The INCOM Lab, which is part of the INCOM project where Develco Products is participating, has developed an IoT enabled hand sanitizer dispenser. It is connected to Develco Products’ Entry Sensor and other smart devices as a part of a system designed to make the lab compliant with current hygiene rules. The hand sanitizer has an integrated person counter and buzzer to remind visitors to use sanitizer in case they forget. Furthermore, through Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) the dispenser forwards data to Develco Products’ Squid.link gateway.

Automating hygiene procedures

Such IoT systems have large potential for application in the smart home care area. By implementing IoT devices, solution providers can enable a more independent living for the elderly and bring comfort and assurance to their relatives.

For instance, the automated sanitizing reminder can ensure that everyone inside the building has complied with hygiene requirements, thus reducing the individual level of stress and uncertainty. It could prove to be especially beneficial for elderly care institutions such as retirement homes. The residents there are more likely to forget to sanitize their hands, possibly due to their age or illnesses such as Alzheimer’s, while simultaneously being more vulnerable to being infected by a visitor.

Benefits for the smart home care area

Additionally, the data collected from the hygiene compliance system is stored in a time-series database, which allows for making predictions about the optimal number of people in the area or the busiest hours in terms of influx of people. The data can also be used to optimize the supply of hygiene products, ensuring constant availability of hand sanitizer, for example.

Similarly, by including other smart white label devices in their home care solutions, solution providers can help their customers to uncover important but hidden patterns. Health service providers can be notified when the Motion Sensor detects a patient’s lack of moving. In cases of emergency, the Panic Button enables patients to call for help.

Develco Products will continue to participate in projects to discover further possibilities for solution providers to improve society’s wellbeing by enabling end-users to implement IoT devices into their daily routines.
